On the 3rd of October 2002, Barnsley Football Club released a statement declaring that the club had been placed into Administration after applying to the High Court in Leeds for an Administration order. In an official statement the Club commented “the granting of the order will provide time for the club to agree a refinancing package”.
There were several reasons as to why the financial side of the club was struggling;
“The clubs relegation from Division One coupled with the failure of ITV Digital and the consequent collapse of the player transfer market has meant that the usual course of action available to clubs in these circumstances has not been available.”
The Club were placed under the control of the Robson Rhodes Administrators, but the club run by two of their employees Charles Escott and Matthew Dunham.
