... When women became less obedient and started to challenge the men they were said to be crazy, this is the case in Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story “The Yellow Wallpaper“. This is a feminist story because the yellow wallpaper represents John and oppression of women, the woman behind the wallpaper represents an the woman Jane wants to become and independent women, and the ripping down of the wallpaper represents Jane’s transformation form oppressed to independent and the transformation of women everywhere
Jane is a controlled oppressed woman. ... John holds Jane back just as the yellow wallpaper retains the figure behind it. ...
When Jane becomes “quite sure it is a woman” (909) that is behind the wallpaper that woman represents the independent woman that Jane wants to become. ... Jane feels a bit of freedom from the oppression during the day when John is gone just as “the woman gets out [from behind the wallpaper] in the daytime” (911). ... The creeping represents independent feminist actions and at first Jane was opposed to them because of the opinions that society had ‘stained’ her with, but later she sees the woman creeping outside in the day light and compares it to her creeping inside in the day light.
