Environmental Explanation Of Autism Bettelheim He was a psychoanalyst and in 1967 did an extensive study on 46 children with autism who attended a special school for emotionally disturbed children attached to the university of Chicago. Bettelheim disagreed radically with explanations which suggest that autism was due to an innate deficit. Analysis of his own work led him to believe that autistic behaviours were symptoms of delayed personality development. Bettelheim drew from Freud’s work that if babies and young children’s needs were not catered for appropriately during certain critical points in their life’s then they would be most certainly have a withdrawal of personality and social behaviour. He advocated that psychotherapy was a way of promoting personal growth in children with autism.
