Who is Responsible for What Many experts challenge the organizational structure of the top companies. It is said, the structure of the organization does not foster productivity. Of course, one can challenge this statement with the review of a Fortune 100 company’s earnings report, but it is worth following up. The Wal-Mart Corporation is a model of perfection for all business schools to see. They have consistently been the number one company for several years. For 2002, Wal-Mart ended the year with $244,524 Billion in total sales. The number one retail company in the world has garnered success for several reasons. Wal-Mart pays close attention to their consumers. They have a team dedicated to the pursuit of increasing sales through understanding the human psyche. What makes a shoppers tick? Why do some products sell well and others don’t? This team is focused on these questions. But from the organization perspective, none of this would be possible without a formal structure. After the executive team establishes an org. chart the next in a series of task is to define the relative authority.
