In the interest of the society The Young Offenders Act was brought forth on April second 1984. This act was created to ensure the rights and needs of a young person. ... Leshied says “On one hand the justice and legal objectives of the act are being effectively realized while on the other hand the needs and treatment aspects of it leave much to be desired”. Leshied says the research of The Young Offenders Act is still on going and that the youth are getting more rights and justice now compared to the past. The Young Offenders Act sets out a structure for young offenders to follow and recognize the value of being distinguished in society.
The Young Offenders Act protects the youths in many different ways such as; alternatives measures programs, which keep youth outside the criminal justice system. They let offenders make up for their offences by either apologizing to the victim, returning stolen goods or community service. ... Another right the youth have is the prevention of publication of information about young offenders.
The Young Offenders Act deals with young people only between the ages of 12 to 17 who are charged with offences. The minimum age of 12 was chosen because it was thought that the children under the age of 12 were to young to form criminal intent, and should not be tried through the criminal justice system. ...
Fines and compensations are sometimes hard to be obtained by young offenders. ... The outcome would be to have the young offender replace what they have taken from the community. ...
