What do Muslims mean by describing Mohammad ‘as the seal of the Prophets’?
The seal of the prophet in Arabic means ‘Khatam’. According to Arabic lexicon and the linguistic usage Khatam means to affix seal; to close, to come to an end The word Khatam in its dictionary meaning and linguistic usage refers to the seal which is put on the envelope to secure its contents. In Islamic ideology God chooses prophets as his messengers. ... It is the claim of Islam that Mohammad is his prophet and he is the last of the messengers sent by God to mankind. ... Noah, Abraham, Moses and Jesus – prophets who appeared at different times and places all conveyed the same faith. ... Therefore, Mohammad was the last prophet through which God transmitted the same genuine message that had been conveyed by the former Prophets. Mohammad conveyed and established this true message through the universal community, which in Medina was known as the ummah. Mohammad is regarded as the seal of the prophets. In the sense that he is the last and he also validates the history of prophecy, like an official seal on a document.
The following is a verse of the Quran, which states, ‘Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but He is the Messenger of God and the Seal of the Prophets. ... It is evident that the above text can bear one meaning and it is that Mohammad is the ‘seal of the prophets’. The term Khatme – Nabuwwat, meaning the finality of prophet hood is applied to Mohammad in the Quran and is therefore understood by all Muslims. ... The finality of the Prophet Mohammad can be observed with reference to his message as well as his status, which will be discussed in detail. Muslims believe that the Quran is a complete code of life. If this claim is right as Muslims believe and demonstrate it to be, the bearer of such message must be accepted as the last law-bearing prophet. ... In Islam the prophet hood has been culminated and finalized in Mohammad. ... The prophet has said, " The chain of Messengers and Prophets has come to an end.
