Most modern revolutions have followed similar patterns. The first occurrence is the middle class seizing power and instituting moderate reforms. The next occurrence of the lower classes, using more extreme measures, gain ascendancy and make more radical changes. Then last the power ends up back in more moderate hands and the revolutionary cycle is complete. The French Revolution follows the same pattern as other modern revolutions. The phases can be broken down into three or five phases. The phases of the French Revolution were, one, the National Constituent Assembly, which occurred from 1789 to 1791, two, the Legislative Assembly occurring from 1791 to 1792. The first two can be joined together to make the first of three phases. The third phase of five is the First Republic and the Terror occurred from 1792 to 1795, this phase is also knows as the second of the three phases. The forth phase is the Thermidorian Reaction occurring from 1794 until 1795, and the Directory from 1795 to 1799. The last two phases are combined to make up the third phase. These phases prove that the French Revolution followed the same pattern as other modern revolutions. According to the revolutionary war pattern, the first step involves the middle class gaining power and enforcing a moderate reform. The first phase is started towards the middle of the year 1789.
