As Irish Citizens we live in a country with a rich culture, a culture which shapes our identity. ... Bertie Ahern’s Government seems set on implementing a ban on smoking which will affect pubs, restaurants and other places in the country, maybe even homes. ... On the 1st day of January, 2004 this blanket ban will be implemented. It will ban the use of cigarettes in pubs, restaurants and such homes that can be called workplaces for example, if there is an au-pair, or a home help nurse residing in the house for working purposes. As a whole the country seems to be undecided about the smoking ban; on the Irish Republican News website given a chance to vote the people voted Yes – 57. ... Irish smokers respect the rights of the non-smoker but the general opinion is that a blanket ban is too extreme.
