Serial Killers
Childhood characteristics:
- Psychologically, physically and sexually abused by friends, family or strangers
- Father may be domineering and abusive
- Delinquent acts such as pyromania, theft, and cruelty to animals
- Early psychiatric problems
- At an early age they are interested in fetishism, sadomasochistic, pornography and voyeurism
Characteristics of a serial killer:
- Over 90% are white males between the age of 25 and 35
- Range from lower to middle class backgrounds
- Average to high intelligence
- Minimum of 3 murders to be classed as a serial killer
- High rate of suicide
- Usually hate their parents
- They reflect a need to sadistically dominate their victim
Who do they kill?
- Serial killers select their victims
- Victims may represent a sort of “symbolic value” to the killer
- Victims are usually vulnerable such as prostitutes and runaways
