Hamilton was a member of federalists. Jefferson was part of the anti-federalists, later called Jefferson's republicans. Hamilton was Secretary of the Treasury. Hamilton wanted a strong central government and Jefferson was strong state governments run by the people. Jefferson was Secretary of State. Hamilton proposed creating a National Bank to help pay of state and federal debts from the Revolutionary War. Jefferson favored a strict construction. He thought the government could only do what the constitution said. Which is why he opposed the creation of a national bank , because the constitution didn’t say the government could make a bank. Hamilton believed in a lose construction.
