Gender Expectation- Topiary Garden.
In the Topiary Garden, the writer tells a story about a young girl questioning the sexist issues concerning herself in the mid 20th century. ... Sally Beck tells Liz that when her disguise had been blown, she could not work in the Topiary Garden anymore because it wasn’t seen as ‘proper’
When Sally was ‘Jack’ she could do thing that women could not, i. ... Women had a bigger say in things, when this story was actually written, in the 1980’s Margaret Thatcher was actually the first ever woman Prime Minister, maybe this helped inspire the writer in to writing a story concerning gender expectations, this shows how in such as short space of time, the 50s when women were more ‘objects’ to the 80s when they were in parliament and even Prime Minister!
Near the beginning of the story, Liz has an art book in which her brother Alan, draws a vulgar picture of a naked woman’s body, which upsets Liz and this could be the event that triggers Liz’s ‘fight’
against gender expectations.
