What happened to maternal mortality from 1900-1940? Why? With many new features of maternal care between 1900 and 1940, there should have been a steep and steady decline in maternal mortality. Yet, as Irvine Loudon stated in his article entitled Childbirth, the rate of maternal mortality grew. The increase in mortality was due to a massive and scandalous failure in maternal care. (Loudon, 216) Irvine Loudon stressed in his article that the most important reason maternal care was so low was due to poor education in certain areas.
and at the risk of repetition I would stress that the single most important factor was poor obstetric information. (Loudon, 218) It was argued that maybe maternal deaths could not yet be reduced with the knowledge available.
