Ecosystem Structure
Ecosystems are complex systems of organisms, the physical environment, and their interaction. The ultimate goal of ecosystem research is to generate new knowledge from theory, experimentation, and simulation modeling about the nature of the complex biotic-abiotic interactions that lie at the heart of ecosystem function. A change in ecosystem structure will therefore have an impact on biodiversity. A new structure may lead to the loss of some species, but can also provide a potential habitat for others that are currently not present. ...
When lakes or ponds are gradually filled and taken over by the surrounding terrestrial ecosystem this is called aquatic succession. ... If an ecosystem is very resistant to such changes we say it is “resilient”.
