Abortion is a right and freedom but many people think that it is not right to have abortion and think that abortion should be illegal. ... I choose this issue because I feel that woman should have the choice to have abortion or not. ... Slightly over half will choose abortion. 4) It is murder 5) Against religious and moral beliefs The subject of abortion has been particularly disruptive in our society. ... In order to gain a picture of the present situation in the abortion debate, a brief view of the legal setting is necessary. State laws in this country, which regularly prohibited it, had ruled abortion. In 1959, the American Law Institute proposed that abortion be legalized in cases where, upon certification of two physicians, an interruption of the pregnancy was required for the “physical or mental health” of the mother. In 1962, the American Bar Association suggested the liberalizing of abortion laws, allowing abortion in cases of rape, and in those instances where the physical and mental well being of the woman was at stake. Abortion is a difficult issue when it is viewed from a religious point of view. ... The Bible does not address abortion directly. However, writings in the early Christian movement by the end of the 1st century or the beginning of the 2nd century do condemn abortion. ... For reasons of womens right to self-determination, protection of their health, adequate care of children which are born and in order to prevent child abuse and mental disease, easy access to abortion is a must. ... In these situations, abortion is often the only way that prevents the birth of an unwanted child or saves a mothers life. ... The issue of rape has to be considered when we discuss the importance for women of having a right to safe and legal abortion. ... Most people now agree that if the mothers life is in danger abortion is acceptable. ... Abortion can be morally justified in many other situations. ... Another reason why I believe that availability of choice is vital for women is that if a woman decides to have an abortion, she will do anything to end her pregnancy. ... Opponents of abortion seem to think that women who choose to have abortions typically do so thoughtlessly.
