Higher Learning Higher Learning questions the “American Way” and American patriotism by comparing different social groups all in their first year of college. It shows how these students adapt to the new lifestyles and situations that they are placed in. From the very start the “American Way” is represented with the American flag flying high, Americans standing orderly, united in a pact to change the world. The camera highlights Remys T-shirt of a skull, from this we can perhaps assume that Remy is rebellious. Another of the main characters Kristen appears to be naïve and vulnerable. She holds on to her handbag in the elevator when Malik walks in, showing the prejudices against blacks. The black hip-hop culture is compared to white rock n’ roll through parties of the two groups.
