Machiavelli’s The Prince, printed in 1532, is the first purely secular guide for government. It explained that a Prince should govern not by relying on religion as in past times, but on logic and appeal to human nature. ... The idea that a good Prince should be feared more then loved and the idea that it is ok for a Prince to break his sacred word stood out the most in the document.
Machiavelli states that mankind is “ungrateful, fickle, timid, dissembling, and self-centered; as long as you can be useful to them, they are entirely devoted to you.” The Prince should be both feared and loved, but since human nature is so evil, in a sense, it is best to be feared since the people will “need” you if they want to live.
