Ligeia Vocabulary Phantasmagoric-A constantly changing scene composed of numerous elements. Ethereal-Characterized by lightness and insubstantiality; intangible. Cornices-The molding at the top of the walls of a room. Perversity-Deliberate deviating from what is good. Trammels-Something that restricts activity. Emaciated-To become extremely thin. Charnel-suitable for receiving the dead. Caprice-An impulsive change of mind. Placid-Undisturbed by tumult or disorder. Plot In the story Ligeia it talks about the narrator and how much he loves his wife Ligeia. He talks a lot about her beauty and so forth. Then later in the story Ligeia passes away and this totally brings the narrator down because he loved her so much. Then the narrator marries another woman, Lady Rowena Trevanion of Tremaine. Then she also dies but it is because the narrator gives her wine that he poisoned. In the end of the story the narrator see’s his love again, Ligeia. Characters Narrator Ligeia Lady Rowena The narrator is not really described at all. The only thing that is really mentioned including him is how much he loved his wife, Ligeia. Ligeia is described as “tall, somewhat slender, and in her latter days, even emaciated.” the narrator also describes her by saying the “music of her sweet low voice”. Then the narrator states how smart she is by saying “ it was immense, such as I have never known in a woman.” Much like the narrator there is not a lot of information about Lady Rowena but it does say how she “shunned him and loved me but little” this is how the narrator said Lady Rowena felt towards him. Setting First it starts by saying how the narrator is in a decaying city by the Rhine river but then the setting changes. Most of the story really happens in England where he purchased an abbey. Then within the abbey a lot of the action occurs in the bridal chamber. Conflicts The main conflict in this short story is really between the narrator and Lady Rowena. The narrator marries Lady Rowena after Ligeia dies and almost immediately finds out that she has no love for him but the feeling is quite mutual. This is quite possibly what causes him to poison her wine and have her drink it which causes her to die. Symbols I believe that the Bridal chamber in the abbey is a important symbol. It seems to remind him of Ligeia so it sort of represents the love that they had and it keeps him from forgetting her. It is probably reminiscent of the love they shared and how it will still be there even through everything that they might go through. Themes I think that the theme is that love can last through almost anything. It shows how strong the love was between the narrator and Ligeia. No matter what the narrator did he still always thought of his lost love, Ligeia. Even after he got married and everything he was still in love with Ligeia. Questions 1. What happens to the narrator and Ligeia in the end? 2. Was the narrator really responsible for killing Lady Rowena? Or was it just a coincidence? 3.What was the real cause of Ligeia’s death? The Black Cat Vocabulary Gossamer-Something delicate, light, or flimsy. Disposition-Ones usual mood; temperament. Uncongenial-Not compatible or sympathetic. Folly-A lack of good sense or understanding. Swooning-To be overwhelmed by ecstatic joy. Fiendish-Extremely wicked or cruel. Evinced-To show or demonstrate clearly. Atrocity-Appalling or atrocious condition or act. Apparition-A sudden or unusual sight. Pertinacity-Persistent determination. Plot In this story the narrator has a black cat which he calls Pluto. At first he really loves the cat but soon starts to grow sick of it. He cuts out one of his eyes and soon after hangs him from a tree. Then he feels happy because he thinks it is dead and gone.
