The Price of Happiness
Out of all the readings we have had during this semester, the one that effected me most and made me think was “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas”, the short story by Ursula Le Guin. ... I asked myself, what if I were a citizen in the city of Omelas, would I be one of the ones who chose to walk away? ... The city of Omelas sounds like something out of a fairytale. ... Even the animals of Omelas are being prepared for the festival. ... She says, “ I fear that Omelas so far strikes some of you as goody-goody. ... The city of Omelas is portrayed as being an ongoing celebration; a perfect city, with perfect people.
She describes the people of Omelas as being simple and happy folks. ... It is especially overwhelming when she explains that all of the people of Omelas are aware of this child and that they in fact participate in the mistreatment.
