Trade Unions Because workers may have difficulty in dealing with an employer on an individual basis they join a trade union. As members of a trade union they unite with other workers to secure better pay and working conditions. Trade unions have existed in Britain for over 200 years. In the early 20th century there were two million trade unions members and this rose to a peak of over thirteen million in 1979. However in the 1980’s there was a sharp fall in the number of trade union numbers. The 1980’s was a decade in which the government showed a marked hostility to trade unions. This affected the wiliness of workers to join unions. The 1980’s arguably saw a transformation in the climate of industrial relations in Britain. The Conservative government, instead introducing large scale legislative reform, passed a number of acts each of which restricted union power at the margin power within the trade union movement had shifted after 1979 because before 1979 small groups of workers who were willing to take part in official strike action and certain trade union leaders tended to dominate the newspaper headlines.
