Narrative voice in text helps to further develop themes, characters and enhance our understanding of the text as a whole. An author’s choice of point of view often affects the type of narrative used the It is also apparent that in some texts more than one narrative voice is present, this is evident in “A Tale of Two Cities” by Charles Dickens where Dickens presents both a first person and omniscient narrative within the same text, because he presents more than one it is important to consider why a certain narrative is used within a chapter and it’s effects both as an advantage and disadvantage. Furthermore it is also interesting to consider the effect of narrative in poetry, more specifically a self conscious narrator in “Ode on a Grecian urn” by John Keats, where once again the type of narrative has its advantages and disadvantages.
Third person narrative is where the narrator is more likely to comment upon the action in addition to recounting it. This is evident in “A Tale of Two Cities” where Dickens opens in third person narrative. Dickens conveys that it “was the best of times” and at the same time it was also the “worst of times”, “season of light” and at the same time “darkness”, through this number of generalizations it is evident that Dickens has used these overviews, in addition to the narrative to emphasise the fact that it could apply to any period of time.
