The beautiful scenery of an unsuccessful play
In the 19th century, more precisely from around 1820, people in America started to turn towards the Gothic Style hoping for a welcome change from the stately, symmetrical architecture of the day. The Gothic Revival was only the first of the many styles that had come into fashion during the so called Romantic Revival and soon houses resembled churches, convents and storybook castles everywhere.
The architecture of this era may appeal to one and may be despised by others, but undoubtedly one is intrigued to find the reasons that had led to the birth of such a strange and controversial style, that was “somewhat like architecture, a little more than scenery, a little less than solids” according to Mumford. ...

Although, next to the Medieval style other styles were popular as well, it was the first and the most widespread, and so it can easily stand for all the others while demonstrating some points about the whole Romantic Revival. ...

Since industry concentrated commerce and population in towns like Boston, Philadelphia and New York, these areas were practically flooded with romantic buildings with Roman standard of comfort, and they started to resemble museums, while the countryside looked like as if cut out of a picture-book.
The Gothic Revival style originally was meant to be executed in stone and brick to imitate the lofty, imposing cathedrals of medieval Europe, however it was not available for everyone who longed for such a dwelling and that is why clever builders developed the Carpenter Gothic with its modest wood frame cottages with scrolled ornaments.
