Duane Hanson was born on January 17th in 1925 in Alexandria, Minnesota, in the American Midwest. ... Hanson, both were Swedish immigrants. When Duane was five years old they moved to Parkers Prairie which was a small town with very little interest in art. ... This painting by Gainsborough was called “The Blue Boy of 1770” and Hanson was thirteen when he carved it into wood.
In 1943 after it was clear that Hanson was not eligible to join the army due to his allergies, he decided to study art at the Luther College in Decorah. ... In this period Hanson met two sculptors who were well known in America at that time: Alonzo Hauser and John Rood. Rood’s figural works impressed Hanson and through him he “was motivated to enrol in the famous Cranbrook Academy of Art in Blooomfield Hills, Michigan, in order to concentrate on sculpture”. ... He spent much time with Hanson. Abstraction was in fashion at the time; therefore, Hanson was trying out everything from abstract to realistic. ...
