When writing about Anthony Braxton, it is important to look at his upbringing in Chicago and the “Ghetto life” that surrounded him as a young child in order to understand how his musical mind works and to get a grasp of his approach towards composing, as the underlying themes within a lot of his musical works can be traced back to his experience of early life.
Braxton has certainly taken a different path with his music than a lot of fellow musicians around at the time of his emergence. However his more Avant-garde approach to music and musical thinking has not been without its critics, Braxton has been weighed down with bad press from jazz critics who see his innovations in music as somewhat “eccentric”
Braxtons younger years provided him with the basis of a rich experience and perspective of life, this experience taught Braxton to be proud of being Black and to take pride in a culture that did not always fit conventional values and behaviour of the so called norm.
