the journey

Samantha Foglia Death of a Loved One When a loved one dies, most children will go through a grieving process that can last a year or more, depending on the importance to the child of the person who died. Be aware of where the child is in the process so you can help in a meaningful way. Many children are deeply upset by the death of a beloved pet, nearly as much as a relative or a friend. The anniversary of the death often brings the return of strong feelings and grief. Steps in the Grieving Process Denial: The child initially believes that the dead person or pet will come back. Anger: The child expresses strong feelings of being abandoned and rejected by the person who has died. The child may express these feelings through misbehaviours and acting out. Grief: The child mourns over the loss. She cries often and feels despondent.
