“All men are created equal.” But what did Thomas Jefferson really mean by that statement? Certainly not ALL MEN, not African Americans. African Americans have come a long way for their rights in America. They have been segregated, killed, hurt, criticized and have had tons of injustice. Did they fight back? No. They boycotted, marched, held up signs and had faith in their country. African Americans did a great thing from 1864 to 1964. I am about to tell you about this admirable, non-violent revolution. A man named Aben Bridges fought in the Navy for freedom in America, a freedom that he didn’t even have. He also risked his life for a white soldier, who did not like him and did not treat him fairly. In my opinion what Aben Bridges did was remarkable and commendable. The fact that he didn’t violently rebel was also amazing. Aben Bridge’s daughter, Ruby Bridges was the first African American child to be sent to an integrated school in New Orleans. Though this was the south where racism was everywhere, there were Jim Crow laws too.
