In the United States today one of the big issues is the question, should downloading music off of the Internet be legal or illegal? People have argued this both ways and they are still debating the subject and have been for the past three years. People who think it’s illegal to download music say things like, “If music is free for download, then the music industry is not viable.”(“Washington Debates…”, para 4) and people who think it’s legal say other things like, “…online swapping of music files actually boosts record sales.”(“Washington Debates…”, para5). Both sides have come up with more proofs why downloading music off of the Internet should be legal or illegal and have a lot of supporters. I think that downloading music off of the Internet should be legal. First of all, file-swapping companies just provide communication among people who love music, Napster does not copy files. It does not provide technology for copying files. Napster does not make MP3 files. It does not transfer files. Napster simply facilitates communication among people interested in music. It is a return to the original information sharing approach of the Internet, allowing for a depth and scale of information that is truly revolutionary.(“Washington Debates…”, para 8) So the music industries aren’t really creating the songs users are downloading.
