What is Art Therapy? How does it work? And what is an Art Therapist? Art Therapy is a healing and life enhancing process through creative art making. Art Therapist work with all sorts of people; Children, adolescence, families, groups, ..etc. Art Therapists are trained in both art and therapy, skilled in the application of a variety of art methods; drawing, painting, clay, and so on (AATA, ”About Art Therapy”). Feelings that are expressed through the art work help therapist tap into the patient and help he/she overcome issues. (NCCATA, “Fact Sheet”). Essential components of art therapy include selecting and using art materials, creating a visual image, and contemplating and making meaning of the art and the image itself. These mental processes and physical actions create opportunities for the client to become aware of ideas and feelings, and making meaning of their feelings and beliefs and the events in their lives. The use of art for therapeutic purposes based on the premise that art reflects the personality of its creator. A therapist will assess a patient and formulate a plan for treatment based on observations made of the materials a patient chooses and his/her behavior in creating a simple art piece (Hands For Health, ”Art Therapy”). Art therapy is for all ages, it’s a treatment for those who have experienced illness, challenges, trauma, or stress (AATA, ”What is Art Therapy). Art Therapy is used as a counseling process to help cope with these symptoms, “enhance cognitive abilities, self-awareness and enjoy the life-affirming pleasures of artistic creativity” (AATA,” About Art Therapy“), “ Stress reduction is also a significant benefit.
