rocking horse

...

The boy begins to swing on his rocking-horse vigorously during his playing hours, speaking to no one, acknowledging no one. When his Uncle asks about his toy horse in comparison to his age, he begins to speak of the track races downtown, to which his uncle is impressed of his knowledge. His uncle asks the name of the rocking-horse, but the boy claims it has no name, yet it changes weekly, and recites the name of the first-place winning horse in a previous race at the track. ... After agreeing to take him to the track to bid on a horse, the boy bids on an underdog horse against his uncles wishes, certain it will win.
