Parker Leach Hallucinogenic Drugs (LSD, PCP, Peyote, Psilicybin, Mushrooms) Brief History In the 1880s, the use of hallucinogenic drugs among Native American tribes in the southwestern United States was common. Peyote cacti were used in religious practices, in particular the “ghost dance” religion. When the Spanish came to America, they sought to ban the use of the cactus among Native Americans so as to lure them away from their “pagan” religions and convert them to Christianity. In the 1960s, noted “hippie” icon, Dr. Timothy Leary promoted the use of LSD as a tool for spiritual growth and exploration.
