... It came to my attention that specific types of music where played in different gymnasiums. When researching the area it was brought to my attention that power lifters often listen to hard rock type music.
This then gave me the idea to investigate whether or not music can have a psychological effect on power lifters therefore increasing their motivation and their performance while lifting. Based on the research of Karageorghis and Terry (1999) it was hypothesized that music would promote flow and thus, would have a positive impact on weightlifting performance. The research could also be extended to find the differences of the motivational impact of music on female power lifters to see if there is dissimilarity because of the lack of testosterone and aggression.
Many studies have been carried out on the value of music effecting performance, these include the work of Dr. ... Peter Terry and many individual studies that include; Effects of asynchronous music on flow states and shooting performance among netball players, Using Music To Enhance Athletic Performance and Effects of synchronous and asynchronous music in cycle ergometry. Studies into the use of background music have left researchers questioning whether it has any measurable effect on athletic performance. It is not certain that background music has a work enhancing effect; however, it appears to enhance the exercise experience i. ... This enhanced experience may lead to improvements in exercise adherence, which may explain the popularity of exercise to music classes.
This study aims to:
• Investigate if specific types of music (hard rock) can enhance a power lifters performance by effecting their aggression
• Investigate if the effect occurs in both men and women
If those aims can be positively met and an enhanced performance is achieved then it will have proven that aggression can affect performance and music can influence aggression.
