Death of a Salesman In Arthur Miller’s play, Death of a Salesman, many instances in the play show us how the capitalist system would lead to the common man’s downfall. Willy, for example, worked all his life in a business where he believed that his success depended on how well he was liked. He believed he was well liked, although he wasn’t liked very much at all. As he slowly began to realize, he couldn’t become successful and teach his boys how to get ahead in life. His “investment” was deteriorating in front of his eyes and he couldn’t stand it. He worked side by side with the capitalist system and yet still, it chewed him up and spat him out “like a piece of fruit” “(Linda) Well dear, life is a casting off.
