In the Time of the Butterflies The Mirabal sisters had played an important part in the Dominican Liberation Movement. They were known by the code name “The Butterflies” by those in the resistance movement. The sisters were important role models and are remembered for their heroic actions and beliefs. They were willing to give up their lives to fight the dictatorship of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo. The Mirabal sisters were born to Enrique and Mercedes (Chea) Mirabal in a small town in Salcedo called Ojo de Agua. The oldest, Patria Mercedes, was born on February 27, 1924. She was born on the anniversary of the Dominican Republic’s Independence and was named after it. Patria means “fatherland”. Patria had a passion for painting and art. She married a farmer named Pedro Gonzales and had four children. The second sister, Minerva Argentina was born on March 12, 1926. At an early young age, she showed signs of intelligence by reciting verses of French poets. She fell in love with and married Manuel (Manolo) Tavarez Justo, who was heavily involved with the anti-Trujillo movement. They had 2 children. The third daughter, Maria Teresa was born on October 15, 1936. She was a mathematics enthusiast and later married an engineer named Leandro Guzman and had 1 child. The baby of the family is Dede. Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina was a former Commander of the National Army. He used his status to gain power and become President of the Dominican Republic in 1938. Under his regime, he had organized a secret police called the Military Intelligence Service (Servicio de Inteligencia Militar). The secret police was responsible for spying on the Dominican people. The people were fearful of Trujillo and his secret police. Trujillo would order the execution of many men, women and children who he believed were spies or who objected to his communistic beliefs.
