Introduction Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., as the world’s largest retailer, is at once one of the most admired and reviled organizations in the world. This report examines the company’s history, its internal and external environments, and its organizational structure. Due to the size and complexity of the organization, this report will pay particular attention to its domestic operations. History The history of Wal-Mart begins with its founder, Sam Walton. Mr. Walton grew up during the Great Depression in rural Oklahoma and Missouri (Huey, 1998). He was quarterback of his state-championship football team and president of his class at the University of Missouri. He worked odd jobs while at home and while attending college. After serving in World War II, Mr. Walton worked in retail settings, eventually opening his own Ben Franklin variety store.
