PART ONE: UNDERSTANDING MEDIA
Video Series From “MANUFACTURING CONSENT: NOAM CHOMSKY AND THE MEDIA”. ... ”
- Noam Chompsky
In my opinion, this statement means that democracy is only established if the people believe solely in it and the only way to make them believe in democracy is to heavily indoctrinate them. ... Media is a very integral part of propaganda. Anyone can use media to his or her own benefit by using their wealth and power. ... These companies profoundly influence the media through funding and stock ownership, thus allowing them to filter what the public sees. ... The media cuts out everything authoritarians don’t want us to see. ... Perhaps I am part of the mass majority that is being marginalized and influenced by all the propaganda because I have no shame in admitting that I do pay attention to commercials and other forms of the media without even questioning who is behind the messages. I am a person who doesn’t care that much about politics but when I saw a commercial for Dalton McGunity’s campaign where he says that he won’t raise taxes but he won’t cut them either because hospitals n schools desperately need that money and from that day on I went on to thinking that he is a good person to win the election, just because of that one statement. ... This indicates that people can be easily influenced by what people choose to advertise in the media. ... They make them see an illusion that looks comforting to them so they can divert their attention from the real matters at hand. ... The media has made a mockery out of current events by airing pathetic shows that are only there to divert the public’s attention. ... ”
- Noam Chompsky
Chompsky is dissatisfied with the idea of only “conventional thought” being conveyed in a commercial or any other situation where an allotted time is given because than the public doesn’t find out what the details of the issue or message really are. ...
4) Chompsky’s access to media does contradict his analysis of it because Chompsky himself uses the media to convey his message to us. His TV and radio interviews, his articles on the Internet and in newspapers are all an example of how he uses the media to persuade us that the media is censured and manipulative. We can argue that he is manipulating us by using the media in the same way big companies use the media.
