Hercules

Hercules was the son of Zues and Alcmena, wife of the Theban general

Amphitryon. Hera, the jealous wife of Zues, was determined to kill her husbands

offspring, and shortly after Hercules birth, she sent two serpents to destroy him as he

lay in his cradle. Hercules, although still a baby, strangled both the snakes with his

bare hands. As Hercules grew he fought many battles. ... Hera still

hated Hercules so she sent nothing but madness on Hercules which then drove him to

kill his wife and children. Hercules would have killed himself but he was told by the

Oracle at Delphi that he should become the servant of his cousin Eurystheus, king of

Mycenae. Eurystheus devised twelve difficult tasks known as the "Labors of

Hercules."

There were twelve labors that Hercules had to do. ... There

were many more labors that Hercules was ordered to do and he achieved in all of

them.

The first task that Hercules had was to kill the Neman lion, a child of

Typhoeus, that was ravaging th country around Nemea. Hercules fired at the creature

with burning arrows and soon realized that it could not be harmed because of his tough

skin. ... Hercules brought the

dead lion back to Eurystheus, but the king cried and shouted out orders that Hercules

never be allowed back into the city. To be on the safe side, Eurystheus had an

enormous bronze jar set into the ground so he could take refuge in case Hercules was

anywhere near.

Hercules second task was to destroy an enormous serpent known as the

Hydra. ...

Hercules nephew, Iolaus, accompanied him to the springs. Hercules soon drove the

monster from its lair by shooting burning arrows, then moved in close with short curved

sword. The Hydra then wrapped its coils around him and Hercules swung his sword. ... Hercules

cried out for help to Iolaus so he set the forest on fire so everytime he cut of one of the

heads, the fire burned it so it couldnt reproduce another head.
