From the ashes of World War I sprung a wave of economic prosperity that characterized the 1920s. Frenzied by this financial boom, people abandoned their traditional Protestant views for the materialism of American business and science. There were, however, orders opposing this change, clinging to the traditional values of the American patriot. The disparity between these groups caused extreme tension, which was apparent in the works of art of the time period. As World War I ravaged Europe, the United States prospered economically and began to rely on mass production in order to supply the world with its goods. With success in business and science came an anti-religious movement. People began to question religion more openly and abandon its teachings in favor of scientific principles.
