The American dream

Chapter Summaries Chapter 1 In the beginning of the chapter a man named Nick tells us about how he moved to New York from the Midwest because of his stock business. Also he says how his father told him to not look up to people with money. Growing up he was very poor, and did not have a lot to look forward to. He then refers to a man named Gatsby, who lives next door to him. He then goes out to dinner with his cousin Daisy and her husband Tom Buchanan. Nick also talks about a woman named Jordan Baker, who is a competitive golfer. Tom tries to interest the others in a book called The Rise of the Colored Empires by a man named Goddard. Tom then leaves the room to answer a phone call, who on the other line is supposedly a woman who he is having an affair with in New York. Later Nick tells us that he watches a man named Gatsby walk outside for the first time. Chapter 2 To start off the chapter Nick talks about the valley of ashes. Tom takes Nick to New York to go and visit Myrtle, the lady that Tom is having an affair with. Before they go there, they go to a man named Wilson’s garage. Tom then takes Myrtle to an apartment where they go to have an affair. Then Nick talks about Myrtle’s sister Catherine. She tells Nick that she has heard that Jay Gatsby is the nephew or cousin of Kaiser Wilhelm, the ruler of Germany during World War 1. Nick also gets drunk at the party for the second time in his whole life. Myrtle grows louder and more obnoxious the more she drinks, and shortly after Tom gives her a new puppy as a gift, she begins to talk about Daisy. Tom tells her never to mention his wife. Myrtle angrily says that she will talk about whatever she chooses and begins chanting Daisy’s name. Tom responds by breaking her nose, bringing the party to a stop. Nick leaves, drunkenly, with Mr. McKee, and ends up taking the 4 a.m. train back to Long Island. Chapter 3: That chapter starts off with Nick talking about how Gatsby throws these great parties every weekend at his mansion. Nick then is invited to one of his parties. When Nick goes to the party, no one really even knows Gatsby, and how he is so rich. There were many rumors, of how he became so wealthy. Nick runs into Jordan Baker, whose friend, Lucille, speculates that Gatsby was a German spy during the war. Nick also hears that Gatsby is a graduate of Oxford and that he once killed a man in cold blood. Nick explains in full detail how expensive the party was going even as far as telling what kind of fruit he had. Nick tries to find Gatsby but instead he runs into this man with these owl eyes. Nick can not find him so he sits down at a table and then he is approached by a young, handsome man who tells Nick that he knows him from war. The man who was talking to him was Mr. Gatsby. Nick then decides to go on a date with Jordan baker, she tells him how she cheated at a golf tournament, which threw Nick off because he does not like liars. Chapter 4 Nick describes a trip that he took to New York with Gatsby to eat lunch. As they are hanging out Nick tells Gatsby about times he had and his past. Nick then feels a little embaressed because then Gatsby tell Nick about his past, and Nick is just blown away with all of his amazing accomplishments. Gatsby along with Nick then get pulled over by a police man for speeding. Gatsby then takes Nick to lunch and introduces him to Meyer Wolfshiem, who, he claims, was responsible for fixing the 1919 World Series. Wolfshiem is a shady character with underground business connections. Jordan Baker then tells Nick what Gatsby had called her inside for at the party. She says that he told her that he is in love with Daisy.
