Plagiarism is the stealing of a writer’s words, language, or ideas by another writer. Stealing can take place in several ways. The most common are: • Using another writer’s ideas without acknowledging them, either in the text itself or in a citation (worst case: submitting writing written by another as if it were your own); • Using another writer’s exact words without using quotation marks to let readers know that the language is borrowed from another; • Using another writer’s language—its syntax and structure. The first two are easy to understand and avoid; if you use another writer’s exact words, surround them with quotation marks and tell readers whose words they are, and if you use another writer’s ideas, acknowledge the writer in the text and provide documentation.
