“One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” is a movie that depicts life in a mental institution. The patients who there are almost completely cut off from the rest of the world. They have created their own world, complete with its own laws and social circles. In our own society, the mentally ill are sadly seen as outcasts, so different from what they should be like. But in the institution, all their quirks, shortcomings, and handicaps don’t seem out of the norm when they compare themselves to each other. The “abnormal” have become what it is “normal,” for the way they act does not seem so strange anymore. However, life as they knew it would soon change forever when the soon-to-be infamous R.P. McMurphy is admitted. A society is bases on rules and accepted practices. To keep a structured environment running smoothly and efficiently, one must abide by the set standard behavior.
