Steamboat Travel Commerce on the Mississippi River

The first steamboat backed into a channel, was the Virginia, which was backed into the
Mississippi from the St. Louis levee in April, 1823 to become the first steamboat to ascend
the Father of Waters into what would later becme the Minnesota Territory. Steamboats
played a slightly large role in the novel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn written by Mark
Twain, in which a steamboat is used to search for a lost child, which in this case, a boy,
and a steamboat also hit Huck and Jim while traveling down a river.
