Some say no. Epidemiologist Marianne Berwick says, “Sunscreens may not protect against skin cancer, including melanoma, the deadliest form.” However, the American Academy of Dermatology quickly responds telling the press that her statement is “misleading and confusing.” They say that if Berwick says this, people will feel that they do not have to wear sunscreen anymore if it doesn’t help. If this is so, Roger Ceilley, past president of the academy, says that we will have millions of more cases in the next decade due to this statement. Berwick looked at the facts. Two studies on squamous cell cancer, a skin cancer, said that sunscreen protected people against this cancer. Two others said that sunscreen did not.
