At the end of the summit Carter planned on holding a nationally-televised conference, in which he would tell the nation about what he had learned and how he was going to lead them out of the current energy crisis. Caddell, One of Carter’s advisers, argued that after fifteen years filled with assassinations, Vietnam, Watergate, and a declining economy, Americans were suffering from a general "crisis of confidence. ... He told the president to address this fundamental problem and inspire the country to overcome it. ... Others in Carter’s administration, led by the Vice President Walter Mondale, strongly disagreed with Caddell. ... ” He suggested that Carter should address those problems, and ask the nation for their support. ... This was probably the worst decision Carter had made in his presidency. On the evening of July 15, 1979, millions of Americans tuned in to hear Jimmy Carter give the most important speech of his presidency. Carter first shared some of the criticism he received at Camp David, and then announced that the solution to the energy crisis can help America overcome its faltering spirits. ...
