... The most famous member of this family was Herod the Great, who ruled from 37 to 4 BC. ... It is said in the gemara, that one has not seen beauty until they have seen the temple Herod built. Yet despite some of the beautification Herod may have contributed, Herod is known as the shrewdest and most ruthless political leader in Jewish history. Herod had close friendships with the Romans that allowed him to identify with them as well. His rise to power came from these connections to the Romans and only spurred on by his desire to be the “king of the Jews”.
Herod’s rise to power originated from he being his father’s son. Herod was born in 73 BCE to a man from Idumea named Antipater and a woman named Cyprus. Antipater was a supporter of Hyrcanus, one of two princes attempting to become king of Judea. ...
As a strong power behind Hyrcanus’ throne, Antipater managed to secure the appointment of his young son Herod, then the age of sixteen, to the position of governor of Galilee. However despite his young age, Herod became very active as governor, and launched himself into a small crusade against bandits. This act made Herod popular with the populace, yet when he aggressively captured and executed Hezekiah, a rebel Jewish bandit thief raiding Roman supporters, Herod became unpopular with the Sanhedrin. The incident proved Herod’s refusal to submit to religious authority, when he scorned the Sanhedrin’s attempt to sentence him for having executed Hezekiah without a trial.
Despite lack of support from the religious community, Herod’s career launch into a state of prominence in the eyes of Rome. ... There, Ceasers heirs Marc Anthony and Octavian convinced fellow Romans to appoint Herod “King of the Judeans”. They were only remembering how Herod’s father was in their support in the civil war between Pompey and Julius Caesar.
