How to Get Ahead Hardball by Chris Matthews gives people a glimpse into the carriers, successes, and failures of politicians past and present. He addresses strategies used by presidents as far back as Roosevelt to recent democrat Bill Clinton. He cites famous strategies used by successful politicians such as Thomas P. “Tip” O’Neil and Lyndon B. Johnson. Lyndon B. Johnson used a strategy known as “retail” politics. While employing this strategy, he had a conversation with every possible person he could. During these one on one chats, he was able to convince a large number of people to support him. This technique started with his beginnings as a congressional aide. While he boarded with other congressional aides, he would go to great lengths to meet and befriend these people. He used this tactic after being elected to congress as well. Granted, this method was much more successful in the one-hundred member Senate than the four-hundred and thirty five member House.
