In the novel The Education of Little Tree by Forrest Carter, A young boy of only five years old, is shown not only in new ways but is taught in old ways. ...
The novel begins at his parents’ funeral; Little Tree takes a trip back home with his grandparents on the bus. Little Tree is young, and he doesn’t understand that people on the bus are not being friendly, nor are they sick, but they are mocking Little Tree and his grandparents because the are of native background. An example of this discrimination towards Little Tree and his family is presented as Little Tree and his grandparents enter the bus, but they have no tickets. ... In this quotation, Little Tree believes the bus driver is being friendly and is not angry with the family for not having their tickets. In the next case the family walks to the back of the bus and a lady whom Little Tree thinks is sick, taunts them. ... This more potently describes Little Tree’s confusion as he assumes the woman is in pain. Finally, as the family goes to sit down Little Tree notices a woman who does not look healthy. ... In
this example Little Tree is most definitely confused about why this woman he has noticed, does not look ‘healthy’. Little Tree does not realize that the woman does not have a disease, nor is she bleeding; but is wearing makeup.
