BAA Sustainability and Surface Access
British Airport Authority PLC (BAA) is the owner of seven UK airports, including the worlds busiest international airport, Heathrow. ...
When opening BAA’s homepage on their website, www.baa. ... BAA’s logo and slogan are situated as a heading at the top of the page with a number of tabbed choices underneath. ... The tabs direct you to different areas of the website, one of which is ‘Sustainability’. ... Very few international companies have a ‘Sustainability’ tab on their homepage… Or do they? The question is what is ‘Sustainability’ and why does BAA, an airport operator, have an interest in it? A dictionary definition of sustainability reads as follows. ... ’ 2
Sustainability is a modern concept created to help prevent social, economic and environmental problems on tomorrow’s society. ... Large companies are now beginning to realise that developing ‘sustainability strategies’ is the way forward and vital to their survival.
BAA has adopted a sustainability concept based on the UK Government guidelines. ...
Within the guidelines there are three key words of which large companies such as BAA must consider. ... 4 On their website BAA talk of ‘sustainable development’. ... It is paramount that BAA increases at a rapid speed in order to maintain a suitable operating level and consequently keep up with the second fastest growing industry in the world. ...
BAA considers itself as a ‘major contributor to the social and economic sustainability of society’ 3 implying that it provides both a service to the general public and jobs to the many people who work for them. Immediately after stating this BAA states that the airports in their control also have a ‘number of impacts’ economically, environmentally and on society. Sustainable development is the modern strategy BAA has created to counteract any impacts it’s predicted growth will cause in the future. ... ’ 4 It is feared that companies like BAA will swamp the three key areas with problems causing instability amongst them. ... However, BAA feels confident that it is to play a major responsibility in developing the aviation industry to suit the future political environment. A quote from the website reads as follows,
‘BAA believes that aviation has a vital role in facilitating a range of sustainability objectives for the UK.’ 3
Having looked at ‘The Governments Consultation Document on Air Transport Policy’5 we can see that BAA uses a lot of the material in the document to help develop it’s own Sustainable Development strategy. This tells us that BAA has to try and follow government guidelines because it is such a large national bussiness and decisions made by the government will effect the development of the company.
Similarly other airport owning companies have developed their own consideration on sustainability. The Manchester Airport Group is the second largest airport operating company behind BAA.
