An institution is a custom that has long been an
important feature upon a group or society and religion
has a history of being just that. Religion is the
practice of one’s views of principles, beliefs, and
values. Religion is so general and so differed, which
is why it is so great. ... Religion, in the book
Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, by Harriet
Jacobs, writing as Linda Brent, has both positive and
negative impacts on Linda. Though it has more of a
positive affect, the negatives of the institution of
religion do, in fact, impact her views greatly.
For instance, one positive effect that religion
bestowed upon Linda was that it gave her hope for the
next life and that God will reward her and her race
the fruits of their labor in heaven.
