The subjection of human life to a lack of freedom known as slavery has existed since the popular conception of a racial-based system developed in the 1680s. George Washington, nearly a century later yet plenty ahead of his time, reckoned that, “I wish, from my soul, that the legislature of this state [Virginia] could see the policy of a gradual abolition of slavery. ... ” Washington knew the future implications that slavery would hold on the American society, but it would take almost 100 more years for a president [Lincoln] to do something about it. Had slavery been abolished when controversy firmly arose around the Missouri Compromise period, the South’s economic, social, and moral impacts would have consisted of positive and negative effects on different groups of the populace.
