A Comparative Analysis of Neo-Impressionism and Post Impressionism

The purpose of this paper is to give a critical essay on three works of art. I have chosen post impressionism. I will describe the works, including the style. I will give a summary of the artists’ point of view. I will give an explanation of how the works fit into the context of the time period. Finally I will give an evaluation and comparison of the works. The first artist I would like to discuss is Georges Seurat and his painting View of Fort Samson, Grandcamp 1885 (130 Kb); Oil on canvas, 25 5/8 x 32 in (Fig 1) “Georges-Pierre Seurat was born on Dec. 2, 1859, in Paris. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1878 and 1879. His teacher was a disciple of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. Young Seurat was strongly influenced by Rembrandt and Francisco de Goya.” (Pioch, 16 Jul 2002) Georges Seurat was”founder of the 19th-century French school of Neo-Impressionism whose technique for portraying the play of light using tiny brushstrokes of contrasting colours became known as Pointillism.” (Pioch, 16 Jul 2002)That is, using “small dots or strokes of contrasting color to create subtle changes in form.” (Pioch, 16 Jul 2002) In this painting there is a sense of openess.
