03.06a The Story of Rome Assignment 3.06a: Please make sure to copy each of the following questions into your answer file and answer each question in complete sentences. The answers can be found in the Beyond Books readings that were assigned on the last page. 1. At its height, what regions did the Roman Empire encompass? The expansion of the Roman Empire was a direct result of wars being fought and won on the empire’s frontiers. Their victories in northern Africa and in southern France founded a Roman colony- settled in Narbonne-and linked Italy and Spain. The empire expanded to Syria, and the province of Asia was established as well. Jerusalem was also conquered. The Romans also established “client kingdoms” that would eventually add to the size of the empire. In addition, Julius conquered what is now known as modern France and Belgium. Due to Caesar's campaigns, Roman civilization expanded beyond the Italian peninsula. 2. How did class structure frame the Roman Republic? Who dominated the government? Who had rights to vote? In Roman society, there were two main classes: the upper class, and the lower class. . The wealthy were in the upper class, and they assumed the traditional responsibilities of holding office, sponsoring games, erecting public buildings, and making charitable contributions. The lower classes included poor citizens, non-citizens, slaves, and former slaves called freedmen. The largest segment of the population of the lower class was represented by the working masses who toiled with their hands in the fields and towns. However, not all of the lower classes were manual laborers. Doctors, musicians, actors, craftspeople, teachers, and philosophers all fell into the lower classes. It was the elites who held the power, after the emperor. They had the right to vote, and had great influences on the Roman Republic, because of their position to make major decisions. These decisions were the foundation of the empire. 3. What were the Punic Wars? What was Carthage's eventual fate? The Punic wars were three wars fought between the Punic peoples and the people of Carthage over the control of the central Mediterranean Sea.
